Plus size OOTD: The modern day power dress

“Dunn, dunnn dun-dun, dunnnn, dunnnn dun-dun, I’VE GOT THE POWERRR!”
That’s the song that plays in my head when I wear this tulip dress from Revelation Fashion. (If it’s stuck in your head now, you can listen to it here).

It’s something about the shoulder pads, and the perfect draping. I feel like I could take on the boardroom, or make a carnivorous venus fly-trap with an insatiable thirst for human flesh submit to my will. (There’s was something about the leafy greenhouse we were shooting, ok?).

Total bonus that it’s really flattering to the curvy figure, and my favourite shade of blue.

What y’all think?

Plus size OOTD: The Layered Maxi Dress

Yaaaaaaaay for new blog post!

These shirt/dresses/maxi dress with a split (don’t really know what to call them!) have become pretty popular on the plus size fashion scene. I fell in love with the red of this one, and thought I’d give styling it a bash.

Do I remember correctly that this style was around in the ’90s? At any rate, it has that vibe for me. There’s something a bit tomboy-ey about it; feminine with an edge, which as you know I love. So I played up the ‘tough chick’ angle and paired it with some combat boots and kickass steampunk jewels, and am pretty chuffed with the result.

What think you, readers?

Plus size OOTD: The Beetlejuice skirt

How is it that I spend so much time thinking about the blog, but the posts materialise so infrequently? Despicable.

This striking black and white stripe skirt from Revelation Fashion give me great glee. Natch, I’ve dubbed it the ‘Beetlejuice skirt’. (Could black and white stripes really ever hold any other significance?)

I love the clash of a classic cut with an edgier print. The result: whimsical. Pair with some rocking, unusual jewelry, a microprint clutch bag, and some gorgeous surrounds, and what you have is a big ‘ol puddle of fun!

Win a tulle skirt worth R900 with Mind the Curves and Revelation Fashion!

I have been obsessing over these tulle skirts since I first saw them.

To put into context, let me explain that when people ask me to describe my taste in fashion, I often say “Imagine what a 3-year-old girl would like to wear all day. That’s me.” Tulle skirts appeal to my inner princess. My secret ballerina. If you’re in one, magical things surely will happen, right?

So, when I saw this object of my desire in a beautiful range of colours start appearing on local plus size designers Revelation Fashion‘s Instagram feed, I knew I had to have one.

Now, lucky readers, Revelation is not only giving one lucky Mind the Curves princess their very own skirt, but all readers a 10% discount off anything on their website if you quote a special top secret code. Scroll down for more info!

Plus size OOTD: mosaic wonder maxidress

I, for one, made the most of the delicious Cape Town weather this weekend. Who knows how much more weather like this we have left?

There was beach, there was waterfront, and there were cocktails with friends. Utter perfection.

It also meant I got to wear my Isabel de Villiers sale rail score. Remember seeing this plus size dress when Isabel first launched it, and going weak at the knees. Somehow I forgot about it, until I saw it again on her sale rail. Score indeed!

It’s super light and floaty, comfortable as all heck, and, with a belt in the waist, really flattering too. One in every colour, please!      IMG_5276_Snapseed IMG_5294_Snapseed IMG_5313_Snapseed IMG_5343_Snapseed IMG_5387_Snapseed photo 4_SnapseedDress: Isabel de Villiers

With huuuuuuge reluctance, here is the last batch of photos from my shoot with Christi Williams of the Grinkie Girls.

I’m so sad that this is the last of it from my amazing time as a plus size pin-up princess. Would that I could do it all over again – Christi – you HAVE to come back to SA!

The awesome shirt in this set is from Cape Town’s pin-up clothing queen, Miss Happ Clothing. I take the largest size in her range, but am hoping, with our support, that she will consider doing more plus sizes.

Coincidentally, the girls from Miss Happ are in Vegas at the moment, representing SA at the world’s biggest pin-up event at the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend. The Blue Haired Betty, who I had the extreme pleasure of working with on this shoot, was crowned 2nd runner-up in the Miss Viva Las Vegas Pin-up Pageant – so well deserved! To see more of our local pin-ups’ adventures, follow Miss Happ on Facebook or Instagram.

I’m hoping the pin-up scene will only continue to grow and grow in South Africa – I know I’m certainly not done with it!

Plus size OOTD: Tropical maxi dress

This tropical-print dress was another score from the sale-rails. Wooohooohooo!
Since adding it to my wardrobe it’s become an insta-favourite, great for everyday wear. It’s comfy and looks awesome – I just can’t get enough of it!

I found it at Milady’s, who I find have some awesome gems if you look. I was interested that it was around 2 sizes smaller than I usually take. Their cuts really lend themselves to the curvier, plus size body. It really feels great to wear a dress that was made for my shape – give and take in all the right places!

Like it or lump it?

While I’m deeply lamenting the end of summer frock season, the good news is that the shops are chockablock full of some great sales.

This Olkpolka skirt at Big Blue was one such score. I fell in love with the unusual print immediately – an awesome fusion of African vibes with a retro nautical feel. Plus I’ve always had a thing for swallows 🙂

With an awesome stroke of luck, the gorgeous scarf Earth Addict sent me from their new Autum/Winter 2015 is the perfect accessory to this gettup. Whatcha think?

Anyone else get some awesome end of season scores they wanna share?

Plus size OOTD double feature: The last of the summer frocks

The chill weather in Cape Town over the past couple days has given me a very rude awakening. SUMMER FROCK WEATHER IS ALMOST OVER!

What even the hell!?

Truth be told, I don’t much mind the changing of the seasons. I like variety, I like snuggling up and reading on rainy days, I like boardgames in front of the fire, and gumboots and umbrellas and crunchy leaves.

But I also really, really like my summer frocks. So I’m going to have to squeeze in wearing as many of them as I can before the full turn of the weather.
Here’s two I really love:
