It’s my absolute pleasure to introduce you to another South African plus size style blogger, Monique De Villiers. Like so many of the people I stalk, I discovered Monique on Instagram – and have been an avid follower ever since.

To be honest, one of the things I love most about Monique is how completely different her style is than mine. I love the bright, funky colours and patterns she wears, and how chic and mature she looks (let’s face it, I look like I’m dressed up for a theme party most of the time). Not to mention my hair envy over her gorgeous locks, and her drool-worthy nailart.

Let’s find out a bit more about her, shall we?

About Monique from Monrobe by Monique De Villiers

My name is Monique De Villiers-Delport. I am a 25-year-old magazine journalist and online coordinator for a Ballito and Umhlanga community magazine. My job allows me to be super social and I am often attending beautiful gala dinners, openings and media launches where I am mingling with celebs and well known people within the community I live in. I got married a year ago to my best friend whom I met at the age of 18. Together we have two fluffy children, Minx a toy pom and Sox our chihuahua. I love photography and I am an avid crafter, particularly scrapbooking. On the weekends you are likely to find me in our craft room (yes I have a whole room dedicated to my hobby) or shopping! I love fashion and love putting together unique looks and creating my own style that compliments my shape and personality. I am a foodie, a lover of life and my faith is something I hold close to my heart.

How do you define your style?

I love taking what’s in ‘fashion’ at the moment and giving it a ‘Monrobe twist’. I love making a look my own by mixing old with new, classics with contemporary, prints with solids and showing that plus size women can pull off any look a smaller woman can! I love prints and most of my cupboard is prints! I love maxis, high waisted jeans and skirts, kimonos and ACCESSORIES are everything! I think I own more statement neckpieces than I do shoes!

Who inspires your style?

I read a lot of fashion magazines which gives me a feel for other peoples style and what is in fashion. I wouldn’t say I follow fashion as such, I like to use elements of what is in fashion to create my own style and look. I have timeless items in my cupboard that are years old that I love to match up with a brand new item. The world around me – street style, art, trends… these are things that inspire me. Although I do feel like plus size fashion is not something you are exposed to in fashion magazines or in stores so I love following people on Instagram and looking under the plus size fashion hashtags for inspiring bloggers and Instagramers who have amazing style and who rock such amazing looks!

What does the term ‘body positivity’ mean to you?

Unconditionally loving your body, being comfortable in your own skin, inspiring others through your confidence and rocking any look you throw together!

What are your ‘secrets’ for learning to love your body?

Learn how to dress your body – learning what cuts, fabrics and items look best on your body shape can do you the world of good! If you feel comfortable and feel sexy – you will look sexy and people will complement you!

Don’t be so hard on yourself – you are not as ‘big’ as you feel! People are not judging you as harshly as you think they are!
Understand your weaknesses and enhance your best features – be it your waist line or your pretty face – invest time into researching ways to enhance your waistline or how to do amazing make up.
Work out – When you are having a ‘fat day’ get out the house and head to the gym or go for a walk – trust me a good work out gets the blood flowing and you will feel amazing!
Be aware of your inner thoughts – Compliment yourself and motivate yourself daily. Watch out for bad thoughts that dampen your mood and get you thinking horribly about yourself.

What do you still want to achieve?

I would love to be a mom one day. I’d love to be fitter. I want to inspire, inspire, inspire in everything I do. I believe that there are so many girls and woman who can be reached who are battling on their body positive journey and I hope to inspire these beauties to love themselves and to stop listening to societies ideal of beauty and rather make their own beauty!

What are you passionate about?

I am passionate about everything in my life. I am a person who wears her heart on her sleeve and I tend to put everything I have into everything I do. Particularly with my blog, I am hugely passionate about plus size fashion and inspiring ladies of all shapes and sizes. Ever since starting my blog last year I have been so inspired by the emails and messages I receive from slender ladies and plus size ladies who have been touched by a post or inspired to wear an outfit they have been too scared to wear because they lack the confidence. One thing I know for sure is insecurity comes in all shapes and sizes and I have always believed style is sizeless…

What do you do for fun?

I love taking photos. Anyone who knows me well know that I always have my little point and shoot in my handbag and that if they go to an occasion with me, I will most defiantly have photos covered! I love scrapbooking and crafting so photos and scrapping go hand in hand. I find it a relaxing hobby that keeps me busy for hours! I am on my 10th album at the moment.

If you were a character from a book, TV or the movies, who would you be and why?

I think I would be Andy Sachs in the Devil Wears Prada because I share her determination to go far and wide to reach my goals and dreams even when the world (Miranda Priestly) is hard on me and it seems impossible.

Who has been the most important person in your journey to body positivity? Can you tell me about him or her?

Jesus Christ. Once I was saved and became a Christian I learnt to love myself and see myself the way God sees me. I am an imperfect person loved by a perfect God. I was made in the image of God and I believe I was put onto this earth to reach those who are struggling and help inspire them to love themselves for who they are because at the end of the day we are all beautiful children of God.

What wisdom would you pass on to someone at the beginning of their body positivity journey?

If you think you look amazing in those jeans… you will LOOK amazing in those jeans! People feed off your energy and if you are putting out a insecure energy – chances are people will pick it up. Fake it until you make it. Learn to love yourself, wear those jeans! Your legs are not as big as you think they are! Eventually you will love yourself and realise how hot you really do look in those jeans. At the end of the day who cares what others think of you? Just because society has painted a picture of what beauty should look like doesn’t mean this is everyones ideal! If you love yourself, others will too!

What is your favourite feature, and how did you discover it?

I would say my face because I have learnt how to do my make up well to work for me. I think having a pretty face grabs peoples attention 🙂

Please finish the sentence. ‘I love my body because…’

It has scars, it has been harmed, it isn’t perfect but it has made me who I am today and has got me through this now, amazing life I have been blessed with. My body is me…
